Kovalam

Kovalam is a small coastal town in the southern Indian state of Kerala, south of Thiruvananthapuram. At the southern end of Lighthouse Beach is a striped lighthouse with a viewing platform. Palm-backed beaches also include Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach. Heading south, Vizhinjam Juma Masjid mosque overlooks the busy fishing harbour. Inland, Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium displays technology used in pearl production.

Attractions in Kovalam

Kovalam is an area which is 25 km from Trivandrum City in Kerala, India, located around 17 km south of the city center. The world famous Kovalam Beach is situated in this area of Trivandrum City. It has some very interesting attractions. Some of the important ones are as follows:

1. Karamana River

Karamana is a river flowing through the city of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, India. The river starts near the southern tip of the Western Ghats at Agastyar Koodam. The river flows 66 km westward and merges with the Arabian Sea at Panathura near Kovalam. The river gets its name from Karamana, a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram city, Aryanad through which it flows. The catchment area is mostly forested, command area is under mixed dry land crops such as coconut, tapioca, pepper, plantain, rice, etc.

2. Vellayani Lake

Vellayani Lake, or Vellayani Kayal as known in local language, is the largest freshwater lake in Thiruvananthapuram district, of Kerala, India. It is around 9 km away from the Thiruvananthapuram Central Bus Station at Thampanoor. Buses ply to Vellayani Lake from City Depot at East Fort also. It is at a distance of 7 km from Kovalam via Poonkulam junction. There is a boat race in the lake during Onam which attracts a huge crowd. Country boat service is available from Kovalam beach to reach the lake.

3. Kovalam Art Gallery

Kovalam Art Gallery is home to many intricate paintings. It is at a proximate distance from Hawah Beach, Trivandrum located on the Samudra beach road. The paintings showcased provide rich knowledge for everybody. It is a feast for the eyes of artist and art lover alike who wish to place their eyes on traditional Indian art.

4. Valiyathura Pier

Valiathura' is was a major port of Thiruvananthapuram city the capital of Kerala, India. It is one of the oldest ports in India. This was once the only port along the South Kerala coast. When Kochi became prominent port in Kerala, Valiyathura lost its significance as a major port. Now Valiathura is considered as a fishing port. Supported by 127 concrete piles, the pier had four 3-tonne cranes and one 10-tonner to unload cargo from the ships.

5. Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple

Thiruvallam Sree Parasurama Swami Temple is one of the most ancient temples of South India. It is situated on the banks of Karamana River near Thiruvallam, Thiruvananthapuram. It is the only temple in Kerala dedicated to Lord Parasurama. The temple is 6 km from Kovalam Beach and 5 km from Trivandrum International Airport and 3 km from Thiruvananthapuram. This heritage structure is placed under the list of monuments of national importance.

6. Neyyar Dam

Neyyar dam is a gravity dam on the Neyyar River in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, South India, located on the foot of the Western Ghats about 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram. It was established in 1958 and is a popular picnic spot. Wildlife includes gaur, sloth bear, Nilgiri Tahr, jungle cat and Nilgiri langur, wild elephants and sambar deer. People can do boating, yoga or visit the Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre.
