It is the historic capital of the kingdom of Mewar in the former Rajputana Agency. Udaipur is located in the southernmost part of Rajasthan, near the Gujarat border. It is surrounded by Aravali Range, which separates it from Thar Desert. It is around 660 km from Delhi and approximately 800 km from Mumbai, placed almost in the middle of two major Indian metro cities. This picturesque lake lies at the heart of Udaipur. It is believed that it was constructed by a local gypsy in the 14th century, and later consolidated by the ruler of Mewar, Rana Udai Singh II in the 16th century. 2. City Palace

This sprawling complex is the largest palace in Rajasthan. It was first built by Maharana Udai Singh, the founder of Udaipur in the 16th century, and expanded by successive rulers. Today, the palace is divided into several museums for which you can get a package rate at the City Palace’s entrance in Badi Pol. The City Palace museum is the first of these, and comprises of a series of mahals, courtyards and private chambers, connected by narrow passages. 3. Ahar

Located on the outskirts of Udaipur city, Ahar was the cremation site of the royal family of Mewar. Despite its history the site is far from spooky. There are over 250 beautiful cenotaphs of 19 rulers from the last four centuries. You can also visit the remains of an earlier capital nearby, and a museum with some archaeological artefacts. About 3km east of the old city, at Ahar, is Udaipur’s royal cremation ground, with 372 cenotaphs of maharanas and queens of Mewar forming a spectacular city of snowy domes built over 400 years. 4. Saheliyon Ki Bari

Sahelion Ki Bari was laid for a group of forty-eight young women attendants who accompanied a princess to Udaipur as part of her dowry. The gardens set below the embankment of the Fateh Sagar Lake have beautiful lotus pools, marble pavilions and elephant- shaped fountains. This small garden was originally laid out in the early 18th century by Sangram Singh II for 48 women attendants who accompanied a princess after her marriage. 5. Bagore ki Haweli

Located on the banks of Lake Pichola, this 18th-century haveli was once the residence of the prime minister of Udaipur. Its rooms and courtyards have been restored and now exhibit traditional crafts and costumes, as well as contemporary paintings. Its first floor has an impressive display of colourful puppets from the state. The haveli also organises dance performances every evening. There are 138 rooms set around courtyards, some arranged to evoke the period during which the house was inhabited, while others house cultural displays, including – intriguingly enough – the world’s biggest turban. 6. Mewar Sound and Light Show

Held every evening at Manek Chowk in the City Palace, this sound-and-light show introduces visitors to the history of the kingdom of Mewar. It is divided into 12 episodes, which narrate stories of the royal dynasty over one hour. There are shows in Hindi as well as English. You can also club the show with a dinner at the European-style café, Palki Khana. Mewar is a good midranger with excellent staff who oversee sun-filled rooms with good beds. 7. Sajjan Garh

This hilltop palace was built in the 19th century by Sajjan Singh as a Monsoon Palace. It’s short drive up the Banswara hill through the densely forested Sajjan Garh Wildlife Sanctuary. While there isn’t much to see inside the actual palace, it’s an ideal vantage point to take in breathtaking views of Udaipur city as well as the surrounding countryside at sunset.
